The Hidden Art
We write for a job.We write for family and friends.Writing for personal business.
When we are not writing, we are reading.
We read posts. We read the subtitles on video broadcasts. We read the news (on our phones, if you are like me).We read emails. We read text messages.
We read forms, signs, directions.
In short, we write and read a lot.
Almost all of it is for Everyday Business.
Instinctively, we know writing is also an art form. We know this because we are attracted to reading material that is artistic. For example, many people like to read novels. Many of us enjoy articles that expand our understanding, because they are so well-written. Many of us enjoy mixed media that includes writing and video together. We know poetry is art, whether the raw kind of poetry in a book, or the type of poetry used by songwriters: Lyrics.
But seeing this art form can be a challenge.
Everyday Writing and Everyday Reading can and does overwhelm our day. We have so much information to process. Any thought of "art" is left to TikTok, emoji text messages, subtitles on our social media. We are consumed by our consumer culture. We get inured to the drumbeat of Everyday Life.
We miss the art form that is right under our noses.
It is hiding in plain sight.
Writing as Art cohabitates with Everyday Writing. These two intermingle on our phones and computers. When we are reading, it can be hard to see which one is which.
It doesn't have to be this way.
One way to step out of Everyday Life is to choose to write.
When we choose to write, it opens up the world. By writing, we begin to see the artistic in everyday life. The Hidden Art is revealed. It was always there, but it was hard to see. By writing, you can see the less mundane.
When we choose to write, we are being counter-cultural. We live in the Information Age. Most of have to process and contribute to this age, for Everyday Life. The choice to write means stepping away from this Information Age, and sharing your authentic self.
Whether it is your personal journal, a letter, a poem, a song, an article, or a book, when we choose to write because we WANT to write, it changes the world. It is like a ripple in the pond, which can have far reaching effects.
It changes the world because it changes Our World. And if we share our writing, it can change Another's World. And that person may then change Another's World. (perhaps by sharing your writing)And so on.
